The A Side: A Day in The Life
Global Classics and Jazz (GCJ) is a division within Universal Music Group (UMG) focusing on a diverse range of music throughout the company, from classical to jazz and beyond (including instrumental, electronic, folk, soul, indie and soundtracks). Working with the company’s market leading and iconic labels, including Deutsche Grammophon, Decca, Blue Note, ECM, Verve/Decca US, Hyperion and Mercury KX, it is the largest and most successful classical and jazz recorded music business in the world. Global Classics and Jazz is committed to growing the international profile for UMG’s genre-leading artists and labels.
As an A&R Research Analyst you will work in a central team at the heart of the division. You will be responsible for supporting classics & jazz teams on international trends across unsigned artists and label rosters, providing data, critical insights and research that inspires action. You will have experience using huge datasets and be confident in translating these into actionable insights. The successful candidate will be both analytical and creative, eager to constantly learn, and passionate about the future of music.
Key responsibilities:
- Produce insights, presentations, and info decks on artists, tracks, genres and audiences.
- Build tools and a suite of reports to productionise various A&R research methods.
- Build smart systems to help analytical processes run faster, smoother and more efficiently.
- Work closely with other insights and data teams to help understand emerging audiences.
- Source and identify artists and audiences with growth potential using internal and external tools.
- As the leading genre-focused team in the industry, you will help guide the strategy for classical, jazz and many other genres at UMG.
- Understand cultural trends as they relate to Classics & Jazz and effectively communicate these to stakeholders.
- Produce research that will help the division reach its growth goals.
- Make sure the use and interpretation of data is reaching the right people at the right time.
- Work closely with A&R teams to locate opportunities.
The B Side: Skills & Experience
Be Analytical
- You are experienced using SQL and understand cloud tools and platforms.
- Knowledge of Google Cloud Platform, BigQuery, Managed Notebooks, Cloud Storage is a plus.
- You are familiar with data visualisations tools such as Domo or Looker Studio.
- You are comfortable at handling and understanding large amounts of information.
- You can reason through seemingly conflicting ideas.
- You are a critical thinker who wants to understand communities and culture.
- You will improve the departments understanding of new music metrics.
Be Operational
- Put together clear reports highlighting artists and areas of interest, by unique qualitative and quantitative information where relevant.
- Feedback and contribute to the general development of the division’s artist data-driven signing and recording strategy.
- You work efficiently with a mindset towards automation.
- You have an international mindset.

- Work closely alongside key stakeholders to streamline processes in this area.

Person Specification
- Experience in an analysis role, working with large datasets.
- Proven track record using data and analytics tools to create business solutions.
- SQL experience is essential. Python, statistical analysis and machine learning knowledge would be a big plus.
- Exceptional communication, presentation, and organization skills.
- Strong interpersonal skills, ability to build strong relationships, and team-orientated approach.
- Experience in the music industry, ideally gained within digital, audience research, commercial, A&R, or streaming.
- Ability to be both creative and data driven.
- Digitally savvy and quick to adapt.
- Different communities and their cultures interest you.
- Proactive attitude to work to deadlines, meet targets and multitask.
