Location: Rugby/Daventry
Reports to: Senior Traincrew Standards Manager


Purpose of the Role

As Traincrew Standards Manager, you’ll be at the heart of operational excellence—driving safety, performance, and professionalism across our Traincrew teams. You’ll lead the charge in maintaining and developing competence through structured assessment, mentoring, and coaching, ensuring our people are empowered, confident, and ready to deliver.


What You’ll Be Doing

You’ll be a trusted expert, coach, and role model—ensuring Traincrew are equipped with the skills, knowledge, and behaviours to operate safely and effectively. Your key accountabilities include:

Competence & Coaching

  • Design and deliver a robust Traincrew competence management programme.
  • Assess Traincrew against route and traction criteria, providing clear feedback and development plans.
  • Step in as a mentor and coach when needed, delivering engaging presentations and hands-on demonstrations.
  • Support supplier employee development through operational coaching and assessment.

Safety & Standards

  • Lead route risk assessments and manage Safe Systems of Work (SSOW) for your area.
  • Maintain personal competence across specialist duties (Exotics, MOD, Snowplough).
  • Deliver safety briefs and lead safety management activities.
  • Support incident investigations and post-incident reviews.

Training & Development

  • Maintain traction and rules training competence.
  • Act as a Human Factors Non-Technical Skills coach.
  • Contribute to the development of new assessment technologies and route learning programmes.
  • Support recruitment and selection of Rail Operations staff.

Compliance & Culture

  • Ensure all activities align with regulatory standards and company procedures.
  • Champion NTS culture principles:

  • Promote equality, diversity, and inclusion across the Operations team.

What You’ll Bring

Qualifications

  • Level 3 Assessing Competence in the Workplace (or equivalent)
  • Level 3 Award in Education and Training
  • Train Driving Licence
  • Aspiring Leader Apprenticeship (Level 3/5)

Experience

  • Train driving experience on Network Rail infrastructure
  • Advanced Traincrew duties (e.g., Exotics, Snowplough)
  • Coaching and developing teams in safety-regulated environments
  • Incident investigation and safety management

Knowledge & Skills

  • Railways and Guided Transport Systems Regulations
  • RSSB Train Driver Rule Book and Traincrew Ts & Cs
  • DRS network, traction, and rolling stock
  • Safety Management Systems
  • Strong communication, planning, and data accuracy
  • IT proficiency (Microsoft Office, NTS systems)

Special Features

  • On-call responsibilities
  • UK driving licence required
  • Flexible working and travel across regions
  • Security Check (SC) clearance
