Accredited Clinical Vascular Scientist  band 7 link grade 8a  Full time

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced and caring Clinical Vascular Scientist to join our team at Ashford and St Peter’s Hospital Foundation Trust.

You will be performing all vascular ultrasound modalities, including arterial duplex, venous reflux duplex, carotid duplex, EVAR, AAA surveillance and graft surveillance.

Main duties of the job

  • To provide a quality scanning and reporting service in all aspects of vascular ultrasound for Ashford and St Peter’s Hospitals
  • To be involved with service delivery and service improvement for the benefit of the patient through audit and research
  • To maintain high clinical standards, particularly regarding patient care, clinical risk and Health and Safety
  • To liaise with other Health Care Professionals and departmental staff daily
  • To continue to develop one’s own knowledge, practice and development through continued professional development
  • To participate in Quality Assurance and Quality Control of the ultrasound equipment
  • To participate in the practical and theoretical training of student practitioners
  • To understand the implications of the Health and Safety at Work Act and ensure a safe working environment for patients, visitors and staff according to the Trust’s Health and Safety Policy

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Clinical and Professional Responsibilities

1.1    To provide a high standard of ultrasound practice and the delivery of an evidence-based service, geared towards patient care. This is in accordance with the CSVS Code of Professional Conduct, CSVS Guidelines and the Trusts’ Policies and Procedures.

1.2    To demonstrate a high standard of ultrasound skills and interpret diagnostic ultrasound information.

1.3    To issue independent reports and discuss with the Manager / Lead Practitioner on further imaging where appropriate to ensure the effective management of patients.

1.4    To exercise analytical and judgmental skills when communicating highly complex information and advice to patients, colleagues and medical staff.

1.5    To prepare the patient for the diagnostic ultrasound examination and fulfil the requirements of correct patient identification, confidentiality and data protection.

1.6    Prepare the environment and equipment for diagnostic ultrasound examinations.

1.7    Develop and maintain effective communication with the multi-disciplinary team to ensure effective patient management.

1.8    To work in conjunction with future collaboratives to meet local and national waiting time initiatives.

1.9    To ensure all examinations and images are fully documented as per the agreed policy.

1.10    To sustain physical, mental and emotional effort to meet the demands of the job. This involves breaking bad news and imparting highly sensitive information to patients and relatives.

1.11    To use high specification technical ultrasound equipment and ensure it is in good working order.

Management Responsibilities

2.1    To actively participate in standard setting and clinical audit within the ultrasound department.

2.2    To work within and contribute to evidence-based protocols and guidelines.

2.3    Be responsible for time management and prioritising your own workload.

2.4    In the absence of the manager, to prioritise the departmental workload.

2.5    To take part in the evaluation and selection of ultrasound equipment.

Education

3.1    To maintain a CPD folder proactively and to continue to develop one’s own knowledge and practice, in particular communication and counselling skills.

3.2    Maintain continued competency in emergency resuscitation, manual handling techniques and fire regulations. To attend the appropriate training as required by the trust.

3.3    Take part in individual performance reviews and personal development in conjunction with the departmental manager.

3.4    To develop and present lectures in line with training and CPD requirements.

3.5    To be actively involved with the training of students, including sonographers, radiographers, registrars and SHOs (both clinical and theoretical).

3.6    Participate in research and evidence-based care to ensure the highest level of patient care.

3.7    To provide external assessor duties for CSVS practical examinations.

Clinical Governance Responsibilities

4.1    To adhere to the trust policies and rules in relation to the Health and Safety at Work Act.

4.2    Participate in the development of departmental protocols to ensure the highest level of clinical governance.
4.3    Adhere to quality and risk management initiatives and targets to ensure the well-being of all staff

4.4    Support staff and colleagues to deliver appropriate clinical competencies to deliver safe and effective patient care and their own professional development.

4.5    Promote, monitor and maintain the safety and security of the workplace through audit and risk management

4.6    To be appropriately equipped to deal with untoward incidents and patient or relatives’ complaints.

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • BSc Biomedical Sciences (or equivalent)
  • AVS (Accredited Vascular Scientist)
  • Evidence of CPD
  • Current Membership to Professional Body

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Broad experience in vascular ultrasound scanning
  • Experience in writing reports
  • Experience in counselling, breaking bad news and referral of patients to tertiary centres
  • Familiar with radiology IT systems
  • General administrative duties within an ultrasound environment
Desirable criteria
  • Experience in quality control
  • Experience in departmental audit
  • Experience in departmental administrative duties

Knowledge

Essential criteria
