Apprentice Quantity Surveyor

Reporting to: Quantity Surveyor/Senior Quantity Surveyor

Role Overview

The Trainee Quantity Surveyor works closely with the Commercial and Operational teams to gain practical experience in managing and controlling the financial and commercial aspects of projects and contracts. The role provides hands‑on exposure to core quantity surveying activities while supporting project delivery teams on live projects

Role Purpose

To support the commercial delivery of projects through effective cost control, reporting, subcontract administration and contractual compliance, while developing the knowledge, skills and experience required to progress within the Quantity Surveying profession

Key Accountabilities

Commercial Management & Governance

  • Support the Commercial Team in the commercial management of projects at pre‑ and post‑contract stages
  • Work within established commercial procedures and controls
  • Collect and update specified areas of the Commercial Plan
  • Ensure daily site and commercial records are accurate and available for inspection

Financial Performance

  • Support monitoring and control of income and expenditure on contracts
  • Assist with producing cost and value comparisons and turnover forecasts
  • Support preparation of cashflow forecasts for internal and client purposes
  • Assist in preparing applications for payment, including substantiation

Contract & Risk Management

  • Produce and issue enquiries to subcontractors and suppliers
  • Receive and analyse quotations, liaising with Contracts Managers and Site Agents
  • Assist with compiling subcontractor orders and tender packages
  • Support preparation of tender quotation comparisons, highlighting commercial differences
  • Assist with tracking subcontractor invoices and payment processing
  • Support preparation of documentation for final account audits

Leadership & Capability

  • Demonstrate strong organisational and administrative skills
  • Work proactively both independently and as part of the Commercial Team
  • Develop understanding of commercial processes and contract law
  • Undertake academic study towards a Quantity Surveying qualification with company support

Stakeholder Management

  • Liaise with subcontractors and suppliers throughout the procurement process
  • Work collaboratively with Quantity Surveyors, Commercial Managers and site teams
  • Support communication between commercial and operational teams

  • Quantity Surveyors and Commercial Managers

  • Subcontractors and Suppliers

Inter-company trading

  • Proactively optimise inter-company trading wherever possible
  • Collaborate effectively within the corporate group entities

  • Accuracy and completeness of commercial records and reports
  • Timely support to procurement, payment and forecasting activities
  • Compliance with commercial procedures and document control requirements
  • Demonstrated development of commercial and technical capability
  • Successful progress towards academic qualification

About you

Essential

  • Conversant with the Microsoft Office suite of packages.
  • Good written and oral communication skills
  • Relevant A-level or equivalent qualifications are required for the apprenticeship.
  • Strong numerical and analytical skills
  • Good attention to detail
  • Excellent organisation skills

Desirable

  • Interest in Contract Law
