The Children and Young Peoples Learning Disability Service in Surrey are seeking 2 highly motivated Registered Learning Disability Nurses to join the county wide service in Surrey.

We are a surrey wide service sitting across 4 bases: Redhill, Leatherhead, Godalming & Chertsey.

CLD is a Nurse led service with Psychology /  AP’s / Psychiatry / Music Therapy / Nurses and our fabulous Admin Support. 

CLD works collaboratively with families carers and the young person to establish a plan of care with them. The majority of the needs presenting are behaviour and anxiety related. CLD has  Behaviour Pathway based on PBS which also incorporates Behaviour Clinics which are run termly with the nurse’s and AP’s.

CLD links in with education school nursing social care  Paediatrics and any other agency that the young person has supporting them. 

CLD has 2 Clinical Issues meetings each month along with a monthly Business Meeting and quarterly LD Forum. We offer regular supervision and appraisal with opportunities for career development.

You will need to be a car driver and have access to a car for work. The role will take your across a geographical area of surrey and you will visit family homes schools and various other locations. You will also be  required to attend training and meetings at Leatherhead HQ.

Main duties of the job

You will need to be a Registered Learning Disability Nurse with knowledge of PBS. Ideally you will have experience of working with children , however we often find that skills are transferable between adults and children. CLD follow the I Thrive Model.

You will hold a case load of children & young people in the community, following a Discovery Conversation where the presenting need has been identified.   Demonstrate expertise and specialist nursing skills in areas associated with learning disability such as crisis intervention, alternative communication, the assessment and management of people with additional mental health needs, epilepsy, medication management, challenging behaviour and other conditions.  To actively involve people in developing and agreeing their own care plan, to act as an advocate and ensure that there is proper regard for their dignity, choice, self-esteem, racial, cultural, sexual and religious needs and preferences To carry out comprehensive assessments, plan implement and evaluate delivery of nursing interventions as part of a holistic approach working in a variety of settings. To practice within the Positive Behaviour Support framework.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

promoting health and independence for people with learning disabilities by delivering high quality nursing assessments, interventions and consultation within a Positive Behaviour Support framework within generic and specialised services; and providing supervision and guidance to Band 5 nurses and support workers.  This will be undertaken within an accessible, non-stigmatising, localized service that contributes to the specialist health care of people with learning disabilities within the locality.

  • NMC Registered Nurse Learning Disabilities
  • Nursing mentorship or Teaching and Assessing in Clinical Practice qualification
  • Driving license and access to a car for work purposes
