HMRC Chief Digital & Information Office is made up of Customer Groups which are working independently towards one common goal. Job description
This is an exciting opportunity to join HMRC’s CDIO (Chief Digital & Information Officer), Borders and Trade working within the IT Operations space.
An Infrastructure Operations Engineer designs, builds, manages and supports the infrastructure services that underpin all internal user services and services to the public. Working in a team of infrastructure specialists and engineers, an Infrastructure Operations Engineer supports and maintains infrastructure solutions and services as directed and according to departmental policy.
At this level, you will make sure services are delivered and used as required as well as work with and support third parties to provide infrastructure services.
Key Responsibilities but not limited to:
- An Infrastructure Operations Engineer is responsible for the preparation and support of IT operations solutions and services, physical or virtual.
- They do so according to industry and organisational best practices, standards, service requirements and Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) throughout the product life cycle.
At this role level, you will:
- Create and maintain documentation.
- Perform all routine tasks according to process and checklists.
- Monitor infrastructure and applications services.
- Alert and take appropriate action.
At this role level, you can:
- Maintain secure configuration and accurate information, controlling IT assets in one or more significant areas.
- Verify the location and state of assets.
- Manage service components to ensure they meet business needs and performance targets.
- Implement change requests.
- Apply change control procedures under supervision.
- Show an awareness of the scripting tools and software that are available and currently in use.
- Show an awareness of developing process efficiency and common ways in which processes are optimised.
- Support specific activities to improve development processes.
- Spot or identify obvious deficiencies.
- Identify and register incidents, gathering the required information and allocating it to the appropriate channel.
- Own an issue until a new owner has been found or the problem has been mitigated or resolved.
- Investigate problems in systems, processes, and services, with an understanding of the level of a problem (for example, strategic, tactical, or operational).
- Contribute to the implementation of remedies and preventative measures.
- Take inputs and establish coherent frameworks that work.
- Assist in technical support activities and carry out agreed or routine maintenance and administration tasks.
- Show an awareness of the relevant subject matter and a high-level understanding of what it involves.

Person specification
Please note this role is specifically tied to the management and operation of Borders & Trade’s instance of Jira and Confluence as well as managing legacy releases.
For Jira and Confluence, the role includes:
- User account management and creation.
- Support for delivery projects and live service teams by creating and administering Jira Projects and Confluence Spaces.
- Server-side support, including reading logs and service upgrades.
For managing legacy releases:
- Baselining and packaging software releases (including Serena Dimensions administration).
- Managing the release process via application tracking software.
- Liaising with stakeholders on project teams as well as 3rd-party support teams (CapGemini and Fujitsu) to manage smooth releases.
Essential Criteria
The successful candidate will need to demonstrate practical knowledge and experience in the following:
- Strong knowledge of Jira and Confluence administration and configuration.
- Strong knowledge of configuration and release management processes.
- Linux experience.
- Knowledge of Serena Dimensions 14.1.
Additional Security Vetting Information
Candidates will either have SC level security clearance or be willing to undertake such.
