Technician – Workshop – London
Our University
Ravensbourne University London is a dynamic institution at the intersection of creativity, business, and technology. Based in London’s Design District in the heart of North Greenwich, we are home to a diverse, global community in one of the world’s most vibrant business and creative hubs.
Background
Our prototyping workshop supports several creative courses across the university, including Product Design, Architecture, Graphic Design, User-Experience and User-Interface Design, and Fashion. Students can access a wide range of equipment and techniques from woodworking and casting through to digital fabrication including 3D printing, laser cutting and CNC machining.
We are looking for a safety-focused and skilled Workshop Technician to supervise and support the running of our workshop throughout weekday evenings and Saturdays.
Please note: this is a part-time role involving working weekday evenings and Saturdays during term-times only, usually:
- Weeks 1-6 of Semester 1 (Sep-Oct): alternating between 2-3 evenings per week
- Weeks 7-13 of Semester 1 (Oct-Dec): alternating between 2-3 evenings per week, plus every second Saturday
- Weeks 1-6 of Semester 2 (Jan-Feb): alternating between 2-3 evenings per week
- Weeks 7 of Semester 2 to Annual Student Showcase (Feb–Jun): alternating between 2-3 evenings per week, plus every second Saturday
The Role & Candidate
You will have hands-on expertise across digital and analogue prototyping and fabrication techniques, with confidence in a wide range of workshop-based equipment and materials.
Safety oversight is crucial to this role. You must be confident being solely responsible for the workshop during our extended opening hours. This involves supervising and instructing several students using a range of tools and machinery simultaneously and, crucially, being firm and consistent in ensuring they follow strict safety and PPE requirements.
Meanwhile, you will strive to provide an excellent student experience, with a compassionate and positive approach that creates a welcoming and supportive learning environment for students.
You will also play a key role in maintaining in a hygienic, organised and well-presented workshop, taking pride in your working environment and bringing a strong sense of professionalism and healthy perfectionism to the role.
